    And Your Little Dog, Too

    Alert Type: Emerald Alert

Issue: Ruby and Mulan run through the woods in Oz, but soon Ruby loses the scent of her pack, which they've been chasing, and she's not sure they were ever really there to begin with. Mulan asks Ruby what she knows about this land. "There's supposed to be a lot of singing....Well, there was in the movie. I saw it in Storybrooke. I think there was a book, too." There have been a couple of subtler references before, but I think this is the most explicitly one of the characters has mentioned reading/seeing these stories outside of Henry's book. You'd think they'd grab a DVD whenever someone new came to town. Think how useful Frozen would have been for all involved!

Complicating Factors: Toto (who Ruby recognizes immediately, so why be coy) runs out of the woods barking, followed by the grown-up, bad-ass Dorothy who we met briefly a couple of episodes ago. She's on guard, saying that Toto only barks at witches. Ruby explains that she's not a witch, she's just part wolf. She tries to show that there's nothing to be afraid of, but when she reaches for Toto, he runs off. She offers to help sniff him out.

Resolution: Just then, a tornado arrives -- the same one Regina sent Zelena back to Oz in. Zelena just wants to get back to Storybrooke and her baby, and to do that she needs her silver slippers. But Dorothy doesn't have them on her and won't give them up, so Zelena takes Toto. Now Dorothy has no real choice but to trust these two strangers.

Spoiler: Someone's a friend of Dorothy!

Hades visits Zelena to warn her about Ruby's arrival. Zelena is terrified that Regina will find out what she did to Ruby, and that if Ruby comes for her, she'll do something else wicked in defense. Zelena wants to stay good, to keep repairing her relationship with Regina, and to get her daughter back. But she has her own way out of the Underworld, and she's frightened enough to use it even if it means leaving her baby behind. Hades wants her to stay with him, but she's not interested.

Ruby used a tracking spell to find Zelena, which is how she wound up in the Underworld. Dorothy went to face Zelena and disappeared. Ruby blames herself for showing up in Oz in the first place.

Zelena has the silver slippers on (along with a fabulous traveling outfit). She clicks her heels twice, but Regina and the gang interrupt her, demanding to know what happened to Dorothy. She tells them that she's under a sleeping curse. Only True Love's Kiss can save her, and while she has the love of the people of Oz, that's not the same thing.

    Who called the meeting? Regina.

What's it about? She wants the slippers so that Ruby can go back to Oz and save Dorothy.

How'd it go? Zelena (who has the shoes on the table, which everyone knows is bad luck!) breezily offers to trade the slippers for her daughter. Regina reasons with her that if she wants to be a good person, Zelena should just give them up in exchange for nothing: "I get it. You did a terrible thing. But just because you made one bad move...or thirty...doesn't mean you can't make a good one now. Zelena, you can come back from this. Trust me, I know." Zelena tells her to keep the pep talks. She has no delusions that anything will change, least of all her or Regina. But she does give up the shoes...and starts drinking.

Mulan and Ruby whip up some sleeping potion to use on Zelena, but they need poppies. Dorothy knows where to get some, and Ruby insists on going with. She asks Dorothy what her deal is, and Dorothy explains that the first time she returned from Oz, when she was a kid, her family tried to have her committed. Only her Aunt Em believed her, and kept her from being locked up. Right before she died, Aunt Em gave her Toto, and now he's the only one who understands her. (We all know where this is going, but at this point, I so wanted True Love's Kiss to be from Toto.)

Ruby shares how her entire village ran her out of town with torches and pitchforks. So she and Dorothy have that in common in a way. After searching for so long, Ruby's not sure her pack is the answer to what she's missing anymore. Dorothy eyes her up and down and asks, "What are you looking for?" Ruby's not sure. Dorothy: "Then maybe that's the problem."

Ruby shares Dorothy's story with the others. She figures that since Aunt Em is the only person who ever really loved Dorothy, she's the kiss they need. She's also conveniently dead, and, according to her gravestone, still in Purgatorybrooke. Snow tells the others how The Blind Witch bottled David's breath, so maybe the same is possible with a kiss.

David and Hook, the latter of whom Snow sent earlier to call Neal on the ghost phone, arrive and report that Hades has had the phone ripped out, as a means of crushing hope. Snow freaks the fuck out about losing the only connection they have to their baby, and Emma tells her it's time to go home. They can use the slippers to go to Oz with Ruby, and then from there to Storybrooke. Regina reminds them all that Snow can't leave because her name is on that tombstone Hades made. Fine, but David can, and everyone agrees he will.

Belle asks Zelena to ask Hades to rip up the contract. When Belle gets a bout of morning sickness, Zelena reminds her that her own pregnancy was sped up by Dark Emma. Belle realizes that Hades could do the same to her and take the baby whenever he wants. Zelena gets an idea.

At the poppy field, Dorothy apologizes for calling Ruby "Wolfie" earlier. Ruby says she kinda likes it, but that in return she gets to call Dorothy "Kansas." They carefully pick a poppy, but are soon attacked by a pair of flying monkeys. Ruby asks Dorothy if she trusts her. Dorothy says yes, and Ruby transforms, carrying Dorothy on her back to outrun the monkeys. Back at camp, Dorothy is clearly wigged out and excuses herself to go to bed.

What's On The Menu At Auntie's?

Aunt Em runs the other diner in town. Wait, theres another diner in Purgatorybrooke? Does that mean there's one in Storybrooke too? Oooookay?

Chicken Pot Pie: Auntie Em's old family recipe.

Roasted Chicken: Rotisserie, any way you like it.

Waffle and Chicken Sausages: Can't go wrong with all-day breakfast at a diner!

Chicken Fajitas: I'm not sure that's what I'd order from a woman who's from Kansas in the 1930s, but you follow your heart.

Chicken Burger: Okay...what's with the chicken thing?

Chicken Soup: The secret ingredient is water from the River of Souls. It's to die for!

Snow's not an idiot, and asks Ruby why she can't give Dorothy True Love's Kiss. Ruby doesn't think Dorothy loves her back, because of how she reacted to her wolfing, so she's afraid to even try it. Snow gives her a big speech about how love is scary and that's part of why it's great.

In the graveyard, Ruby leaves the gingham on Em's grave. Aw. David and Killian tell the gang that they remembered that Hades enchanted Killian's hook to carve the names on those gravestones in the first place, so while nothing can be erased, he crossed out Snow's name and wrote David's. She needs to go because Ginnifer Goodwin is 13 months pregnant their son needs her and if anything bad is happening in Storybrooke, she's the leader they need.

Zelena gave Belle the needle for her sleeping curse. She wants to use it to use it on herself because Emilie de Ravin is much more pregnant than Belle and needs to lie down to prevent the baby from being born until Rumple can solve everything. He thinks it's all a ploy to get him to turn back to the light so he can wake her, but she doesn't care about that; her father can give her True Love's Kiss when the time comes. (I'm no fairy tale or romance expert but fathers and aunts...this seems like a really liberal and incestuous definition of True Love's Kiss.) Before Rumple can argue any more, Belle pricks her own finger and she's down!
