How To Update Your Podcast App For The New EHG RSS Feed

We're moving the EHG feed offsite because it's just too damn popular and is killing our bandwidth when new episodes go up. Unfortunately we will lose the ability to separate EHG from EHG Minis and there's just going to be one feed to rule you all.

We will flip the switch to just this new feed in early Decemeber. Here's how to update:

iTunes: iTunes will pick up the new feed automatically but when it does it might think everything is new.

Other Podcast Apps: If you need to manually update your podcast app of choice with the new feed this is what to put in:

The Storied History Of The Extra Hot Great Podcast

A while ago, before Previously.TV, we did this podcast for a couple years. Then we stopped. Then we started again.

One Frequently Asked Question

Q: Is the old Ray's Original EHG Podcast run available for download?
A: Not at the moment. It's on our list but not at the top. It's weirdly complicated and expensive to put a back catalogue on a podcast hosting service.

The Canon

Each week we hear a pitch for an episode of a TV to be included into The Canon. Sometimes it is one of the EHG gang pitching, sometimes a guest, and sometimes EHG listeners just like you. When an episode wins a majority of votes it is in The Canon for eternity.

Submission Guidelines For The Canon

Submissions For Game Time

Do you know what time it is? It's (time to submit your games for) Game Time! Each episode of the podcast ends with an epic test of TV trivia and some of the best, craziest, and most fun ones have come directly from our listeners. Some game types we've played in the past include thematic quizzes (e.g. "What's My Ride?," matching the transportation to the show), knowledge endurance tests (e.g. Hot Potato, where a list of related things are traded back and forth -- one we already did involved opening credit cast members of Law & Order), and if you are feeling ambitious we also do audio quizzes (e.g. theme songs). If you want to check if your idea has been done before, just email Dave. Here are the guidelines for submissions:

Help Us With Existing Game Time Ideas

Sometimes we get (or think of) a great Game Time idea but we need more questions. That's when we ask the awesome folks who follow @EHGassist on Twitter. Join us there!

The EHG Lexicon

A quick guide to some of the shorthand we use on the podcast.

The Blankenship Chair: Named after frequent guest and frequent urinator Mark Blankenship.

Cinnamon Toastencrunch: That's what we call Benedict Cumberbatch after Jeff Alexander put it in our heads.

"CHOMP!": Megan Draper.

I Am Not A Crackpot: Perfectly sensible opinions the world has yet to embrace for some stupid, misguided reasons.

Is This Worse Than Jazz: We compare things to jazz (which is terrible).

Joe's Blowsy Blondes: Joe's category of preferred actresses whose brassy, unself-conscious personalities make them irresistibly delightful. Includes but not limited to Busy Philipps, Leslie Grossman, Ari Graynor, Kathryn Hahn. [Note: "blonde" can be flexible.].

Nineteen: Average age of Vietnam combat veteran.

The Nonac: The anti-Canon. The worst shit show of an episode of a good show. i.e. Battlestar Galactica's Black Market.

The Pierce: The character you can lift out of a show and drop in an active volcano without changing the show much and maybe improving it in the process.

Shits and Giggles: Just for fun. i.e. Playing the tiebreaker question after someone has already won Game Time.

"Shaa-ping!": A quote useful to remind ourselves of our — and Paz de la Huerta's — place in the universe.

Spoilers A-ho, Fun Ahoy: One Day Dave forgot how to say "ahoy" and we ran with it.

Smooth Joey Apollo: Joe's odds-maker alter-ego.

Tara Ariano: Wig Cop, Tara Ariano: Accent Cop, Tara Ariano: Continuity Cop: Tara Ariano is on the case on TV's little and wig mistakes.

"That's Bullshit!": On occasion Peggy Oslon tells it like it is.

The Spread Eagle: Seventeen.

Timothy Off-With-His-Pants: Timothy Olyphant. Dave wrote a jingle and everything!

Through Methods: How you get things others don't know how to get. i.e. "How did you watch the new Luther already?" "Oh, you know... through methods."

The Unhateables: Actors who are universally beloved.

Will Dave Hate This: People take sides on an upcoming project and explain whether or not they think Dave Will Hate This. Dave then explains his view and a winner is declared. Traditionally the loser commits suicide.

Have you started doing the minis yet? Am subscribing through iTunes but haven't seen any and don't want to miss them (gawd forbid).

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

First one is tomorrow (Wed Aug 28) 9:15am ET SHARP.

  • sadiekate415

Hooray for your return! I have entered your url into my favorite podcasting app! That sounded dirtier than I had intended.

  • madweekay

Um, speaking of Cumberbatch, were you guys behind this? http://benedictcumberbatchgenerator.tumblr.com I think I remember an EHG mini that had Dave rambling made up Cumberbatch names...

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

Ha, no but that's in the same spirit for sure. I have to dig that mini up and repost it.

  • http://poptimism.tumblr.com ccccatie

It's here in the meantime! http://notthatindie.tumblr.com/post/26459898360/i-just-realized-that-i-had-never-actually-seen

I have to go back and listen to it every once in awhile. For my own wellbeing. (Bonnebell Cherrychap)

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

LOL that list is a lot longer than I remember.

  • Vicki

Shouldn't "That's Bullshit" have a place in the lexicon?

  • Amy Bryson

I thought I remembered a canon submission for Peep Show. Did I imagine that? Or maybe it was just a general discussion about the show?

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

    Hmmm. I don't remember.

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

Just like old times would be 2 minutes clips. This is a 50% larger user Canon universe! I think it works just fine.

  • John Abides

I seem to remember you calling it The Peep Show, and Tara repeatedly correcting you. A tense moment in the podcast, to be sure. Canon submission? I do not recall.

  • TaraAriano

Correct. The "Peep Show" episode was "A Beautiful Mind," and we talked about it in podcast Episode #84 (lead topics were "Hysteria" and "Battleship"). It...WAS inducted into The Canon.

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

Added! Thank you all. I think there's probably a couple others missing.

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

"That's Bullshit: Used when a thing is bullshit."

  • corgi-ears

I like the new nic, One Day Dave.

  • Matthew Siegel

Is Matthew Lizard (Matthew Lillard's apparently permanent new face) Lexicon-worthy? I know it was sort of a one-off joke during the Descendants episode, but I can't watch an episode of The Bridge without thinking how appropriate it is.

  • Matthew Siegel

I will say, as a submitter who got something into the Canon* that 2-3 minutes is workable as long as you make preparations (I wrote up a draft of what I wanted to say, said it out loud a few times, made edits, and then just read it like a script) and treat the tastes of the hosts like a feature and not a bug (i.e., pick something that at least one of the them could champion on their own).

*Nope, not gonna stop gloating about this.

  • Stephanie Baker

Will any of the old canon submissions be made available?

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

    Hopefully, eventually.

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

    Added!

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

We also end up recapping the show a bit 'live' but submitters to not, which works. Our first couple submissions where 6+ minutes and they never aired because it just didn't work right.

  • Krista Searle

    What about The Blankenship Chair?

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

    Oh yeah! THAT guy.

  • banjax451

What about: "Will Dave Hate This?"

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

    Added!

  • Natalie Cain

Re: the storied history, last night I was re-listening to ep 88 of Original Recipe EHG, the one where you guys announced you were hanging it up. Dave said that all of you being in one room was a required feature for this particular podcast working. I'm just curious, what changed your mind?

  • http://glark.org/ David T. Cole

A part of it was having Sarah on board and so everyone had someone to bounce off in person (Joe & Sarah in NYC, Me & Tara in LA) and the other thing was we all missed it enough to figure it out. There's a couple failed attempts on file before episode 1.

  • Mark Blankenship

YES, Krista! THAT guy is clearly the entire reason this podcast has succeeded. DUH.

  • Profreader

I have to say - I remembered the "must be in one room" thing - and when I realized that you were managing to pull this podcast off somehow being on two coasts, I was amazed. Sound quality of the vocal recording is a big thing for me with podcasts - there are some podcasts that I had to stop listening to because of the sound quality with people Skyping in. I don't know the technical term for that kind of too-compressed clipped Skype sound, but it's unbearable to listen to. Whatever wizardry you are using to manage the audio in EHG is really astounding - I would never guess that you are not all in the same space - the interplay is very natural.

  • eleanorundeadgoat

People who have been using the "main only" feed so that they never miss a main episode should consider switching their podcatching app of choice to a "download all episodes" setting, rather than downloading only the latest episode. In iTunes, this is under "Settings." Then you also will not miss out on any of the joy of the minisodes, hooray!
