Dinner For Five Does A Threesome

Of guests, that is -- which, given that one of them is Marilyn Manson, is kind of fitting.

I think this is the first episode I ever saw? It's a long time ago now, so I'm not sure. I can tell you that between this and Clone High I've always had a soft spot for Marilyn Manson and thought he would be a smart hang.

It's a decent ep, and while the table chemistry is different from the episodes with four guests, it's not worse, just not the same -- and the fourth, Michael Rapaport (a semi-fixture on JB Smoove's version of the show on MSG Network), gives good guest with this sort of thing but I think would have shifted the conversation even further away from what a baffled Daryl Hannah thought she was getting into.

How Dinner-ish is the episode? To the table!

Dinner For Five-esque Element Present?
The guests Manson, Andy Dick, Hannah
Rocky Marciano reference? Unsurprisingly.
Mrs. Parker reference? Ditto.
Swingers/Made reference? It's a miracle Favs could even get this shot off, given how much of the meal is devoted to porn, Manson's abortive attempt to recreate Jackass, and strippers -- but since there's a stripper character in Made, he manages to get it in. Um, as it were.
Booking bust I mean, it depends on your tolerance for Andy Dick; I liked the episode, though I found it a little much in spots as far as feeling like Manson is trying to shock Hannah/the viewer. But the show isn't called Dinner For Four, and while excuses don't get much better than Rapaport's -- he was with Ted Demme when Demme collapsed -- it does count.

I kind of feel for Hannah at the end when she notes plaintively that she kept trying to bring the discussion back to independent film, but you don't notice her doing so during the episode, and she gives pretty good dish that I'll talk about in a sec.

Were we ever so young? Cigars; Favs's flip phone;

the "revelation" that "rockers are doin' Broadway!" nowadays; "Blockbuster's having real troubles!"; some project called Porn Star that Favs and Judd Apatow were working up that I don't think ever happened; joking threats to call up Rick James to fill in as the fourth guest.

Industry dish Favs commenting that he would never try to talk shop with Sean Penn deserves some kind of ambassadorial medal. Hee. I also liked Hannah talking about how her Russian-Jewish father, a real-estate guy, was approached to invest in The Producers when it was still called Springtime For Hitler and hurled the script across the room; and how Blade Runner's collaborative atmosphere spoiled her. She's also right that watching a movie with subtitles may make the performances seem better because you're not physically looking at them most of the time.
Lissen lissen lissen [hic] Not that I could tell; Favs is really cracking up when Manson's talking about trying to get refunds on hotel-room porn, but I think it's just funny.
